Explore photograph creation maximizing the capabilities of your digital camera using ambient lighting. A variety of photographic genres and their stylistic attributes to be introduced. Assignments allow for the exploration of non-commercial photographic traditions, leading to an increase of understanding of high-resolution digital-capture, editing, post-production, and printing, each implementing proper photographic workflows. Critical thinking skills are strengthened to enhance photographic narratives. Students must have their own DSLR or mirrorless camera with removable lens, and manual controls including; aperture, shutter-speed, ISO, and RAW file capability. Note: Specified printing paper, portfolio box, Adobe Lightroom Classic v_, and external hard-drive required.

VCPH-1450 Digital Imaging I

Introduction to technical and aesthetic fundamentals of digital image manipulation using the most current computer software and hardware systems for the input and modification and combination of digital files.

VCPH-1812 Spec Topic: Photo Expeditions

Explore specific off-site locations with your smartphone, DSLR, or mirrorless camera, and a packed meal. This course will spend an exciting day of each week shooting on location, and the second day editing, and completing post-production, followed by a critique of Tuesday’s photography shoot. Whether your focus is landscape, street photography, collaborative-portraiture, or another genre of photography, discovering your personal vision within new environments is the focus of this exploratory class. Camera-RAW file format capability is required. Students are expected to have their own transportation, as travel to off-campus locations is a required component of this class. External hard-drive required.

VCPH-2050 Commercial Studio Techniques I

This course introduces students to photographic strobe lighting (at times combined with ambient light sources) within the photographic digital capture studio. Students will be introduced to shooting portraits, products, food, fashion, and advertising images, focusing on lighting setups, efficient digital workflow, and editing one’s photographs for professional results. Efficient workflow in the creation and post-production of appropriately formatted digital files will be implemented. Students must have access to a DSLR or mirrorless camera with manual controls and a removable lens, with RAW file format capabilities. Students must have limited access to wardrobe and props.

VCPH-2160 Digital Video for Photographers

Introduction to digital video capture, video editing, and archiving techniques for still photographers. Advanced critical thinking. Students must have their own DSLR camera with adjustable settings and the ability to capture in Camera RAW format and large capacity (1T min.) external storage drive.

VCPH-2260 Photography II

Students build on their skills from Photography I creating photographs that derive from the conceptual, as opposed to being strictly documentary. Advanced color and black & white file conversion and output. Critical thinking used in group work discussions. Students must have their own DSLR or mirrorless digital camera with adjustable settings and removable lens with RAW file format capability. External hard-drive required. College specified digital printing paper and portfolio box required.

VCPH-2450 Digital Imaging II

Advanced visual problem solving in digital imaging. Refined techniques for compositing and digital illustration in commercial based environments. Photographic images and components supplied and created by the student form the foundation on which projects are built for print, multimedia and Web applications.

VCPH-2541 Individual Projects in Photography
3 Credits
Designed for students to dive deep into extensive investigative photographic and text-based documentary bookmaking projects. The subject-matter explored by each student is proposed by the student based on parameters defined by the professor. Approvals are granted following conversations with the student, along with their fellow students, via written proposals. Progress and grading are determined according to course rubric criteria. May be repeated for up to six credits.

VCPH-2550 Commercial Studio Techniques II

Advanced lighting and camera techniques for commercial studio photography. Concept development for photo illustration. Students must have their own digital camera with adjustable settings and the ability to capture in Camera RAW format. College specified digital printing paper and portfolio box also required.

VCPH-2770 Commercial Studio Techniques III

Covers essential hand skills relevant to work in a commercial photography studio including basic construction, painting, food handling and product styling. Team-based assignments will introduce students to client-based workflow from initial contact to concept development to deliverables. Guest speakers and field experience will expose students to professionals and real-life work environments. Students must show mastery in tethered capture and digital post-production skills.

VCPH-2991 Professional Business Practices and Portfolio Prep for Photographers

This course will introduce students to the business and marketing practices common to photography. Emphasis will be placed on developing professional objectives based on careful consideration of their personal goals and the financial, legal, organizational, interpersonal and ethical practices particular to photography.
