About: The driving force in all of Michael Flatt's classes is the role sociology has in sharpening critical thinking skills to help create a more engaged citizenry. As a medical sociologist with a research background in gender, sexuality and bioethics, he is dedicated to helping students better understand how the roles we occupy in society intersect in meaningful ways. Learning to apply the lessons from sociology opens up a wider lens on the world around us, giving us insight to the invisible forces that shape our lives. He teaches classes on race and ethnicity, gender and sexuality, death and dying, deviance and social problems.

About: Rachel Stehle came to Tri-C as an adjunct in 2002 and was hired as a full-time faculty member in 2005. Her specialty is racial and ethnic relations and gender. Prior to finding her path as an educator, Stehle worked as a case manager for a welfare-to-work program in Toledo and as a regional supervisor/case worker for a nonprofit organization serving low-income older workers in Cleveland. Considering herself a lifelong learner and a passionate advocate of higher education, Stehle completed her Ph.D. in 2023 in Theoretical and Social Foundations of Education: Sociology of Education. Her dissertation was a critical analysis of the neoliberal influence on higher education and explored student, faculty and administrator perspectives on Inclusive Access programs through the lenses of Antonio Gramsci’s theory of hegemony and Johan Galtung’s concept of structural violence.

Currently, Stehle is the co-chair of the Carol S. Franklin Social Science Speakers Series and a founding member of the Institute on Economic Mobility. She serves as the program coordinator for Sociology and Anthropology at the Western Campus and is involved in the Racial Justice Initiative, SOGE council and Safe Zone. She is also a Tri-C-certified Diversity, Equity and Inclusion professional. Her goal each semester is to inspire students to constantly seek knowledge and to be active, participating citizens in their communities.

Although she grew up in Sandusky, Stehle is proud to call Cleveland home. In her free time, she takes tap, jazz and hip-hop classes and she loves to read. Her claim to fame is appearing in the movie Rudy when she was a member of the Notre Dame Marching Band (trumpet), and she is a featured character in Domers: A Year at Notre Dame by Kevin Coyne (Viking, 1995).
