About: Derrick L. Williams, PhD aka “Prof. D” & "Blue-Collar-Scholar" is an activist intellectual, super communicator, and organizational development specialist. Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while growing up in the small coal mining town of Graysville, just outside of his birthplace of Birmingham, Alabama, he has been speaking before audiences since the age of four. Derrick comes from a humble working-class family as the great-grandson of Alabama-Black-Belt sharecroppers, grandson of a coal miner, and son of an ironworker and daycare child educator.
Fostering a personal connection with students to facilitate lifelong learning stands at the center of his zeal for teaching. His educational philosophy can be summed up in a quote by Dr. King: “The purpose of education, therefore, is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically.” As a first-generation college student, Williams started his educational journey at a community college and has never forgotten the professors who inspired and influenced him.
He has over 20 years of experience teaching undergraduate and graduate courses at the University of Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois University, John A. Logan College, Case Western Reserve University, Baldwin Wallace University, and Cuyahoga Community College.
His many awards and honors include the Ralph M. Besse Excellence in Teaching Award in 2019, the Jack, Joseph, and Morton Mandel Humanities Faculty Fellow in 2019, the League Innovation Community College’s Teaching Excellence Award in 2020, the Faculty in Leadership Sustainability Award in 2021 and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award in 2022.
When Derrick is not teaching, he speaks and presents across the country at places such as the University of Iowa, the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, Boston University, and Ohio University to name a few.
